An infrequent cough may just be a natural way of the body to clear the lungs and it does not necessarily indicate a more serious health issue. However, if your child is experiencing an unrelenting cough for over a week already, you may be required to visit your health care provider or your child's pediatrician for medical interventions as he may be suffering from a bacterial o viral infection.

If your precious little one has a relentless cough, he will not only be the one to suffer. You will surely also worry about your kid's condition. As a mom, it hurts me a lot when my kids are sick, even if it's just a simple cough. Thankfully, there are many ways to soothe a child's cough. Here are a few home remedies for mild cough which are readily available in your kitchen.

Chicken Soup

Chicken soup is not only excellent for colds, but it is also equally effective for coughs as well. According to some studies, it has been proven that chicken soup does offer therapeutic benefits especially for people who are suffering from various diseases including colds, cough, and sore throat. It has also been pointed out that chicken soup possesses anti-inflammatory and mucus-thinning properties that help in alleviating the signs and symptoms of cough and common colds. Chicken soup is said to be more effective if cooked and added with vegetables.

Honey

Honey is one of the most commonly used home remedies for a cough. It is widely known as a natural throat soother. Raw honey has antibacterial properties which are helpful in fighting off infections. For children suffering from a persistent cough, using honey would be very beneficial. You may give half a teaspoon of pure honey to your child as often as needed. However, this superfood should not be given to children below two years old because it possesses a certain microorganism that may cause infant botulism.

Honey and Lemon

Giving your child a warm fluid added with honey and lemon will help alleviate his cough. To make a honey-lemon formula for your child’s cough, simply mix 1 tablespoon of honey, freshly squeezed lemon juice, and warm water into a cup.

Throat Lozenges

You may give your child throat lozenges. These lozenges may help your child clear up the mucus that thrives in the throat, thus making feel more relaxed. It is important to ask a healthcare professional first with regards to using throat lozenges before giving them to your little one.

Fluid

And lastly, it is a must to maintain an adequately hydrated system. Keeping your child hydrated all the time may help him get over the discomfort brought on by a cough. Water and juice are said to be potent expectorants that may help loosen up phlegm. Give your child something to drink to help ease frequent coughing.

Whether your child is suffering from a cold or a cough, you may find the natural remedies as well as homemade suppressants to be very effective and safe. This is true in mild cases.
However, if your child’s cough persists for a week, these certain home remedies may not work well at all. I still highly recommend you to see a pediatrician.
